The Drama Of Government Power And The So-Called “Patriot” Act:
As most everybody who reads “American Liberal Times” should know by now I am nothing and nobody but a little insignificant Lib with a blog and all I ever do is complain about what I see as the craziness of The American Political Radical Right – - – but I guess that is what that First Amendment thing is all about – - and besides… don’t the Right-Wads do much the same thing to me?
Physical And Mental Aspects Of The Dilemma
These are the days that dreams are made of as far as I am concerned. Maybe these are the days that nightmarish dreams are made of. I know the dreams being described in some of the media surrounding the Patriot Act lately certainly don’t seem to me to be any form or fashion of an “arousal” dream or anything like that – - it seems to me to be more of a hemorrhoidal thing instead.
It Had It’s Beginning With Righties
But before anyone goes off the deep end and starts yelling and screaming about what some people are imagining to be some “negative” effects of The Patriot Act, can we stop and take a breath and remember that this thing was signed into law by The G.W. Bush Administration and was used in a time of national crisis – - – and that back in those days if anyone opened their mouths and complained about any of it there was the very real possibility that somebody with some kind of clout would have called them “Traitors” or something like that?
It was some scary times to be sure!
Take Care When Placing Blame
I remember that I thought the political atmosphere was very intimidating to anyone who might express some opposition to what the regime in power at the time was saying or doing. So don’t anybody dare try to blame the continuing power of “The Patriot Act” on Democrats because if anybody is going to successfully dis- empower this legislation it will take a bi-partisan effort at a time when one side seems determined to obstruct everything the other side tries to do.
So now it looks to me like a lot of folks are spitting nails and using extra underarm deodorant because it has been revealed – - alleged – - reported – - that some government agencies have used a section of “The Patriot Act” to justify grabbing individual citizen’s phone records for whatever the reasons – - and I am guessing here – - most likely “security” reasons if the truth were known – - or at least I hear that might be the justification coming out of some of these agencies.
Shape Shifting Won’t Cut The Mustard
Some of what I think of as the sorry-assed on the Radical Right Side of things are reportedly bitching that these “wiretap” kinds of problems are somehow the fault of the democrats now – - – and because the Patriot Act has all the look and smell of something Rightist I don’t think it is fair to blame the Dems for it all.
My opinion is that the only reason the Democratic President signed an extension on the thing to begin with was because it somehow looked like something that might be found acceptable by the obstructionist Rethugs and might have been seen – - wrongly of course – - as a key that might have opened the door to greater cooperation between the Right and The Left on major national policy – - an idyllic idea that never came to fruition thanks to intransigence and obstructionist domination of every single thing the president tried to do.
Results Of Governmental Incompetence
The way I look at this developing story about some government agency using sections of The Patriot Act to grab private citizen’s communications records is that the Rethugs exercised their power back in the day and passed an act that they most likely figured represented the best of what their leadership had to offer – - which is probably true – - I think it does represent the best their kind of leadership has to offer – - and I think their brand of leadership has always been one of failed policy and I think that failed policy and failed elections is actually their best effort to date – - and now I believe I am being justified in feeling this way about the Righties and their brainstorms – - I think they passed this thing when they were at the apex of their power and now it is coming back to bite them – - and everybody else on the ass – - and they are scrambling to find ways to blame the Democrats for the whole mess – - because I think they are desperate and need something to justify themselves – - anything will do – - anything at all – - controversy – - conspiracy – - or this! Anything at all!
Get It Right Or Give It Up
Short story here folks: ”If you have a bitch about national security measures such as “Patriot Act” – - you have only the Radical Right to blame. It was their brainchild – - they rammed it through – - it is the Law of the Land – - it is up to the People to deal with it through the legal channels of elections – - – and I cannot see where any Right-Noodle has any justification for trying to stick the Dems with any negative connotations even though the Dems tried to appease the Right by signing an extension on the thing.
I am still convinced that in some mysterious fashion, even though I view some of the provisions of The Patriot Act as perhaps a little on the oppressive side sometimes – - I still have this vague little feeling in the back of my mind that the Act has somehow done something positive to keep us safer from Terr-ier-ists than if it hadn’t ever been there in the first place. Some folks agree with that idea and some don’t. I wish I had more information about how the thing works or is supposed to work but like I said at the beginning – - I am just a Mr. Average Citizen Type and it isn’t in my knowledge base to understand much about these complicated-assed things.
Now it would seem there are some on the side of mindlessness over on the Right who want to “demolish” the Patriot Act. Of course I believe there are those over there who also want to “demolish” our entire political system and replace as many of our current elected officials as possible with something some of them like to call “Disrupters” but that is a whole nuther story! – - – regionalized word meaning “Other.”
Opportunity Knocks On Heads Again
What I really think is that maybe here is an opportunity for the two sides to get their heads together again like they did in the good old days before there was such things as “Red States and Blue States” - – back when there was only “The United States” – - – maybe this is an opportunity for Republicans and Democrats to work something out on a bipartisan basis – - like our government is really supposed to work – - and to either modify the parts of the Patriot Act they don’t like or to replace it with something that everybody can live with.
This thing ain’t no biggie for me because I love and respect The Government of The United States of America. I spent 7 years and three months in two separate branches of the Military doing my level best to defend The United States and I am not afraid of my government. It has been pretty damned good to me and I don’t feel like I am going to wake up some sweet morning and be hauled off secretly somewhere against my will and I am still waiting for the Right-Turd predictions about all that “Tyranny” they have been squawking about to come to pass. Nobody has knocked on my door looking for guns yet – - has anyone from the gubmint knocked on yours?
If some of this record-grabbing shit has been going on ever since the Patriot Act was signed into law, I would like to hear the stories from any private citizen out there in Blog Land who knows for sure that their own personal security has been placed in any kind of danger or jeopardy because of it because if I don’t hear “stories” then I can only assume that this is nothing more than another Right Wing thing that will – - somehow – - ultimately be turned into another “Investigation” by some Rethug-heavy committee looking for something to smear the president and the administration with – - which seems to be the only libidinous outlet for a lot of them up there in the seats of power these days.
So everybody – - has this thing caused any damage to anybody or is this just another wave of unjustified paranoia about the “Gubmint” that might be exploited for political purposes?
You know – - like I am not all that happy about strangers reading my shit without my knowledge or permission – - but if it is going to help keep me from getting my head cut off by some asshole on a city street in broad daylight or something like that – - then I think I could quickly approve of whatever security measures the government might wish to put into place for my own safety.
But I guess everybody is going to have their own take on this kind of stuff and I guess that is part of what Life is all about.
