WE ALL NEED A FEW CHALLENGES TO MAKE LIFE INTERESTING!
That old saw that I kept hearing about the 47% of Americans who are said to want to live the good life at the expense of their fellow citizens – - – and we heard plenty about them during the last presidential campaign – - from the elite side of life – - keeps ringing in the ears of my memory – - and I must say it still pisses me off! It must have pissed off a lot of others too because “that” side of the political equation lost their virtual asses in the election despite all their prognosticators predicting a landslide victory for them. Snark!
I have never been convinced that all that many people want to live a life of ease on the taxpayer dime. I know quite a few 47% types who actually work at low-paying jobs trying to hold body and soul together – - they work long hours at pittance wages with no health care or any other benefits and they are grateful to their taskmasters for the “opportunity” they have been given to get nowhere in life.
But the thing about some of those who are kept at the bottom of the fiscal totem pole by the greed mongers who must think they own their employees – - like chattel slaves or something – - the thing about them is that they tend to be resilient – - they are adaptive to hardships – - and like all human beings, they learn from the hardness that is foisted upon them – - and are . . slowly, surely, inevitably strengthened in their resolve to escape their bondage and to do better for themselves.
These are some of the benefits of being challenged in life – - difficulties and hardships can be the wellsprings of opportunity to those who seize the moment and determine in their hearts to lift themselves.
I remember when I was faced with poverty after having lost it all in 1978 – - after struggling against the tides that threatened to overwhelm me, I got mad as Hell one day and determined in my heart that where I was was not where I was intended to be – - I determined I was better than the circumstances that had overtaken me – - and this anger was the catalyst that made me search ever harder for the way out of my predicament – - and as the Scripture promises, He who seeks finds! The key is to seek! The trigger that starts the seeking process is something I call “A Burning Desire.” The soul must literally become inflamed with a hatred of the surrounding evil – - and when that happens, a small light glimmers at the end of what seems to be an insurmountable tunnel – - and step by cautious and measured step, one can advance toward that light until the breakthrough is finally achieved. And with persistence the breakthrough is always achieved!
This is what I call the “fighting” spirit and it is in the genetic makeup of all humans. Americans have proven this for centuries now – - first overcoming their wilderness surroundings and their hostile enemies and later the challenges of a civil war and a great depression that could have destroyed a less resilient People.
If one wishes to tap this inborn wellspring of possibility, all one has to do is begin the search and develop an insatiable thirst to find victory and freedom – - and I have discovered the darker the circumstances seem to be that surround an individual, the stronger the drive becomes to do better.
This I believe is one of the reasons that none of us have to accept the path to nowhere offered to us as citizens of The United States by the false promises of contemporary radical American Conservatism.
Can someone say “Amen?”
